Ontario online sportsbook & casino payment methods 2024

Ontario has a newly legal & regulated market for online gambling providers. Whether you are completely new to online betting or casino play, or you were active within Ontario's former "grey market", you may have questions about the situation regarding the available payment methods in Ontario now. The good news is that there has been one major positive development in this way, as a result of regulation: PayPal is now available at a limited number of legal Ontario sports betting and casino site operators. However, credit card online gambling deposits remain defined as "cash advances" in Ontario, which always come with high interest & fees. Important for avoiding such fees in the issue of credit vs. debit cards, many bank debit, bank transfer, mobilee-wallet & prepaid solutions remain available in Ontario. We outline these methods below, and the recommended brands that support each.

Why credit cards are expensive vs. debit solutions at Ontario gambling sites

Mastercard and Visa credit cards are available to make deposits at all Ontario online sportsbooks & casinos. While convenient, credit card deposits to gambling sites in Ontario, (and all of Canada) are treated as "cash advances", rather than "purchases".  Thus, interest begins to accrue from the moment of the deposit, even if you always fully pay your monthly balance. Furthermore, your bank will charge a flat cash advance fee, in the region of $5.  With interest rates that can approach 30%, this can be a very expensive method for online gaming deposits in Ontario that you would be advised to avoid on an on-going basis, in favour of other methods.

Thankfully, there are several of reputable bank debit methods that work instantly and directly with your Ontario bank account & come with very low fees, likely a few dollars per transaction at most, or in some cases, no fees.  These include, Visa & Mastercard debit cards, Instadebit & iDebit.  The latter two methods let you securely login to authorize a bank debit without sharing your banking credentials with the sportsbook.  The most popular online gambling payment method in the country remains Interac, which is essentially available now at every iGaming Ontario operator.

About Interac for Ontario gambling site payments: e-Transfers, Interac Online & Interac Payment Requests

You will note that Interac is accepted by all our recommended Ontario sportsbooks & casinos. However, Interac has three different main variations to make deposits to these operators: Interac e-Transfers, Interac Payment Requests & Interac Online. Most operators support some mix of these options.  Interac e-Transfers will be available to you no matter which bank you are with. Interac Payment Requests are also fairly widely available if you are with just about any major or regional bank.  However, Interac Online is currently only available for use with a limited number of banks.  At last check, just TD Bank & RBC supported Interac Online.  So if you are with another bank or credit union, Interac e-Transfers or Payment Requests will be your Interac payment options. With Payment Requests, you indicate within the gambling site cashier page that you wish to deposit a certain amount. Then, the site will send you an Interac Payment request in that amount. You simply follow the prompts to log into your online banking to confirm the payment. Super simple.

What's the difference between Interac Online & Interac e-Transfers as a betting site payment method?

If you are with TD Bank or RBC, and you choose to deposit via Interac Online, the payment is done as part of your web session within the gambling site.  In this case, Interac Online and the gambling site are communicating with each other directly to move your funds securely and seamlessly to your gambling account.  With Interac e-Transfers, the payment solution is not integrated in this way, as you actually send the e-Transfer as instructed by the operator and provide a reference number in the notes of the e-Transfer to ensure that your payment is correctly attributed to your online gambling account.

Gambling can be addictive, please play responsibly. Visit ConnexOntario.ca for help. Eligible iGames conducted & managed by iGO are only available to those physically present in Ontario.

How long does it take for Interac e-Transfers to land in your Ontario gambling account?

Even though you might manually create the payment, receiving Interac e-Transfers at the online gambling brand is an automated process.  Your funds should land in your gaming account within seconds. On some occasions, it can take a few minutes, but this is rare.

Which Ontario gambling sites accept Interac?

All of our recommended Ontario betting & casino sites and support Interac for both deposits and withdrawals.  No matter which one you choose, you will be able to deposit funds via one or more of Interac e-Transfers, Interac Online or Interac Payment Requests.

Is PayPal available at betting sites in Ontario?

Yes!  Since Ontario is now a fully legal online gambling market for both operators and players, PayPal is now available as an online sportsbook or casino payment method at a limited number of legal providers. However, since Ontario has had long history in the so-called "grey market", a lot of other payment methods remain more in use. As such, few operators have looked to add PayPal as a payment method in Ontario. To date, there are only two operators that we recommend that support PayPal in Ontario. Outside Ontario, only BCLC's PlayNow offers PayPal for players in BC & Saskatchewan, as this is a fully legal online gaming option in those provinces. PayPal will not work toward "offshore" gambling sites.

Is Apple Pay at Ontario online sportsbooks & casinos?

Yes, Apple Pay is available in Ontario as an online sportsbook & casino payment method at a very limited number of operators within the market. Luckily, they are our #1 and #2 recommended Ontario gaming brands for you. So if you'd like the convenience of funding your online gambling account with Apple Pay, you have some great options.

Note two key points about Apple Pay & Ontario gambling sites: 1) It is good for deposits only. The operator will dictate the method for withdrawal, likely a bank transfer.  2) Visa or Mastercard debit cards are certainly superior to use with Apple Pay as compared to credit cards. As we discussed above, due to high interest rates and fees, credit card deposits to all Ontario gambling sites become very expensive, even via Apple Pay.

What other e-wallets besides PayPal are available for online sportsbook & casino payments in Ontario?

MuchBetter as an e-wallet is very similar to PayPal in terms of the way in which you may use it to buy things online or make payments by linking to credit cards, debit cards or funding them from Canadian bank accounts, or even via cryptocurrencies.  MuchBetter can facilitate some particularly large transactions in Ontario once a customer becomes fully verified, thus it can be particularly helpful for high-stakes bettors in Ontario. Players do need to take the steps to submit identification documents and prove source of funds however, in order to satisfy Anti-money laundering regulations, which can require some patience to get started.

What pre-paid solutions are available at Ontario gambling sites?

Paysafecard is by far the most widely supported pre-paid solution at Ontario online sportsboook and casino providers. It is also the most widely available pre-paid option for physical purchase at retailers across the province.  Paysafecard PINs are also available for purchase online in several CAD denominations.  Simply buy the voucher or card in-store or online, then once at the gambling site cashier area, enter the PIN code to grant your funds.

Another prepaid solution similar to paysafecard, called Flexepin, is available to use at Betway Ontario, JackpotCity Casino Ontario and Spin Casino Ontario.  Flexepin works in the same manner, it is just not as widely available for sale or as supported as paysafecard.
