Today, online sports betting and casino brand, NetBet, received its license from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. Previous to Canada passing Bill C-218 to allow single event sports betting, NetBet's Canadian-facing site NetBet.ca, regulated by the Malta Gaming Authority, served players across Canada from the so-called "grey market".
In anticipation of their application to become one of several legal Ontario betting sites, not only did NetBet stop serving players in Ontario, they stopped serving players across Canada. When you visit either their dot-com or dot-ca sites currently from within Canada and look to register, you would be greeted with a message stating that registration is not allowed.
NetBet has always been interested in gaining local licenses in its markets of interest, once legal frameworks have been set. It is now locally regulated in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Italy and Romania among others.
