Yesterday, Kambi announced that they have entered into an agreement to supply retail sports betting terminals to 10 Great Canadian Entertainment casino locations in the province of Ontario. The implementarion of this format of retail sports betting is the first of its kind in a retail setting in the province.
The company formerly known as Great Canadian Gaming, which is owned by Apollo Global Management, made waves in Ontario when it sponsored a self-serving study in opposition to online sports betting and iGaming during the time when the province was trying to form regulations toward opening its iGaming market. This effort was lambasted in a column in The Globe and Mail (see embedded tweet for a link to that piece, which is pay-walled).
Unlike Fallsview Casino and their operator MGE, which intends to launch a legal Ontario sports betting app under the Fallsview banner, also supplied by Kambi, Great Canadian appears to only wish to serve customers within its actual locations with this deal. No online sportsbook solution has been mentioned.
Great Canadian currently has 12 gaming locations in Ontario at Woodbine Racetrack in Etobicoke, Pickering, Port Perry, Ajax, Elora, Peterborough, Milton, Hamilton, Belleville, Brantford, Kawartha Downs, and Gananoque. The release did not communicate which 10 of these locations would be implementing the sports betting terminals.
