Detroit Redwings announce PointsBet as official partner

January 13, 2021

Yesterday, the NHL's Detroit Redwings announced a multi-year partnership agreement with PointsBet.   The Michigan online sports betting and casino market is set to launch in just nine days, on January 22. This agreement positions PointsBet to establish its brand as one of the leading Michigan betting sites and online casino providers to fans of the iconic, "Original Six" hockey club.

Specifically, the agreement will provide for the renaming of the sports bar known previously as "Sports & Social Detroit" at Little Caesars Arena (where the Redwings play their home games) to the "PointsBet Sports Bar."  The re-branded venue will offer a full-service food & beverage menu, high-definition televisions, live betting odds, special guests, unique programing, VIP access and gaming promotions.

Furthermore, the agreement means that PointsBet will also be featured within television broadcast-visible virtual signage just inside the blue lines, as well as on LED PointsBet signage and branding throughout Little Caesars Arena during Red Wings home games.

To date, PointsBet is not yet an official NHL betting partner of the league itself, though this could change in the future.

PointsBet is expected to release its market-leading sports wagering site and app for sports bettors within Michigan in early 2021, pending regulatory approval by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

In advance of the market open and potential product launch, interested Michigan-based individuals may participate in the company's free-to-play challenge, the PointsBet Pick 6, a contest-style game that allows sports fans across the country to experience PointsBet's premier service and technology while presenting an opportunity to win $25,000 every week.

PointsBet CEO Johnny Aitken expressed his thoughts in the news release:

"We are thrilled to extend our relationship with the Ilitch organization and announce this partnership with the Detroit Red Wings, a very proud and storied NHL franchise with an extremely passionate fanbase".

The mention of an extending of the relationship with the Ilitch organization refers to a prior agreement between PointsBet and the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball, which was struck in July of 2020.  The MLB club is also owned by the Ilitch organization.

In summary, PointsBet is positioned to be a well-recognised online and mobile sportsbook and casino gaming provider in the state of Michigan in advance of its official market launch.
